Since 2007 I started to tie classic salmon flies without a vice, in the old fashioned traditional way. This was inspired by previous exchanges with some of the world’s best salmon fly tiers and especially after my trip to Scandinavia, where I saw some old flies as well as finally met the tiers with whom I was in contact that practiced this discipline.

I think is nice to keep this tradition and is a way to really understand perhaps the classic salmon flies.
This means a few changes of course, since the fly is tied with the porpuse of being fished and not just for show!
So the silkworm gut is tied all the way up to the point, the bodies are much fuller, you get some nice tapers and the head is thicker but proportioned. The use of silk and wax is the only way that the materials are attached - no glues or anything else.
Tying in these way is rarely practiced and by very few. It requires some skills, determination and patience. The flies are always tied with original materials, and sometimes this calls for some extremely rare and hard to find feathers or even furs. The hooks are handmade replicas of old hooks .
They are specially made to be treasured… perhaps in your collection! |
